日本語では、生き物や物の数え方がちょっと複雑なんです。今学期は特にたくさん数え方を覚えなければいけませんでした。小さい動物は「一匹、二匹、三匹…」大きい動物は「一頭、二頭、三頭…」鉛筆は「一本、二本、三本….」。人間の数え方はこれまた特殊なので私のクラスでは、ヒッピーさんを数えて練習しています。「一人、二人、三人、四人、五人、六人、七人、八人、九人、十人のヒッピーさん」と…。歌を歌って覚えたんですが、「数え方はほぼ、プロ級！」と言ってしまってもいいのでしょうか。

Counting animals or things is a little complicated in Japanese. This semester in particular, students needed to learn how to count many things. Counting units for small animals differ from large animals and long skinny objects… Counting people is also unique so we have been practicing by counting hippies. “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, and ten hippies (with honorifics)”.  They memorized this by singing a song. At this point, should we safely say “We are experts at counting in Japanese!”, I mean, can we?
